Synthetic personas
A synthetic persona is a simulated research participant: a large language model conditioned on a specific demographic and psychographic profile, then asked to respond in character to interview questions, survey items or creative stimuli. Unlike a traditional persona — a static document describing a customer type — a synthetic persona is interactive. You can ask it something the profile never anticipated and get an answer.
A synthetic persona does not have opinions. It has a probability distribution over what someone matching that profile would plausibly say, learned from text. Whether that distribution is close enough to a real population to inform a decision depends almost entirely on how the persona was constructed.
Synthetic vs. traditional personas
A traditional persona is a synthesis artefact: a researcher runs a dozen interviews, finds three recurring patterns, and writes them up as named characters. It takes weeks, costs a share of a full study, and cannot answer a new question. A synthetic persona is a sampling artefact: it is generated in minutes from population-scale distributions plus your segmentation brief, and it responds to anything you ask.
Both have failure modes worth weighing equally. A traditional persona from 2022 still pinned to a wall in 2026 is wrong slowly and quietly. A synthetic persona is wrong confidently, answering questions it has no basis to answer.
How one is built
Four stages: specify the population the way you would brief a recruitment agency; ground the persona's attitudes against real survey data rather than letting the model invent them; query each persona independently so a simulated group does not collapse toward consensus; aggregate into themes or distributions.
Stage two carries the quality. SynthFolk samples attitudes from the European Social Survey and Eurobarometer across five European cultural regions, so a persona's institutional trust or price sensitivity reflects a measured distribution for that profile rather than a model's impression of one. Grounding does not fix everything — sycophancy and hallucinated specificity are model behaviours, not persona ones — but it is the difference between a research instrument and autocomplete in costume.
Synthetic personas are valid for comparison, screening and breadth. Their output is a hypothesis you validate, not evidence you act on unchecked.
